This collaboration between John James Audubon State Park and KY Fish & Wildlife’s ‘Kentucky WILD’ program\, will combine wildlife-watching adventures with Audubon’s art. Enjoy a 3.5-hour wildlife-watching adventure led by a Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist and Kentucky State Parks staff. These van tours begin at John James Audubon State Park and will take you to Sloughs WMA\, where you will explore the area and search for birds. Explore the rich artistry and history of John James Audubon’s life and work through an Audubon Museum visit. Your admission is included. Choose from several educational presentations: Friday evening\, learn from the Museum Curator about the birds John James Audubon drew in Kentucky. Saturday morning/afternoon\, advance your birdwatching skills with a “Birding Basics” presentation and explore the woods on a guided birding hike. Saturday evening\, gain info about eagles in Kentucky from a Fish and Wildlife biologist and experience the park’s live bird of prey program. \nRegistration must be made in advance: $45 for Ky Wild members; $50 for non-members; minimum age to participate is 12. M. Olson! Roberta Olson received her Ph.D. in Art History from Princeton University. Curator of Drawings Emerita at The New York Historical and Professor Emerita of Art History at Wheaton College in Massachusetts\, her interdisciplinary research concerns drawings\, Italian Renaissance art\, and representations of birds and astronomical phenomena. Among her most recent books are: Audubon as Artist: A New Look at “The Birds of America” which she will be discussing in this presentation. She is collaborating with the publisher Taschen on a double-elephant-folio-size book of all the Audubon-Havell plates entitled John James Audubon and The Birds of America. This event is free to the public and will be accessible through a link that will be posted to our social media pages. All participants\, please meet our naturalist on the Audubon Museum front lawn to be counted in this First Day event and help us beat our attendance record!! Hikers will experience the winter woods of the nature preserve during this picturesque 1-mile guided hike over hilly terrain. These will start out as guided hikes but can diverge from there\, if you’d prefer to go your own way. Sturdy shoes\, walking sticks\, and attire suitable for the day’s weather are recommended. No pets\, please. Bring your whole family to experience the trails of John James Audubon State Park’s nature preserve in ways few people have–after hours\, with approaching darkness—a TWILIGHT HIKE—Saturday\, June 7 at 7:30 P.M.! Naturalists will lead you on a 2.1-mile hike over moderate terrain\, traversing hills\, and a staircase. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and bring a plastic lantern or flashlight with you. Meet at Warbler Road trailhead by the Welcome Center. Cancelled if raining; rain date June 14. Please watch our Facebook and Instagram pages for announcements.
