DESCRIPTION:Park Photography Competition \nDeadline: June 30\, 2026 \nSend submissions to Connor.Humphrey@ky.gov \nOn display beginning July 11th \nCost: Free \n  \nFor the second year\, John James Audubon State Park is hosting a photography competition! The guidelines for this competition are: \n\nTwo submissions per photographer\nDigitally submitted photos will be printed on 8.5” X 11” photo paper by the Museum Curator and placed in frames for display.\nPhotos will be judged by the Museum Curator and Park Naturalist. They will be displayed in the Museum Lobby. The public will be allowed to take photos in the exhibit.\nPhotos submitted must have been taken ON PARK PROPERTY between July 1\, 2025\, and June 30\, 2026.\nPhotos are to be emailed to the Curator with a title for the photograph\, and your preference for printing it on either glossy or matte photo paper.\nPhotos must be emailed as an attachment. Copying and pasting images into an email will distort the quality and can affect how they are judged.\n\n  \nSelected winning photographs will be on display in the lobby of the John James Audubon Museum beginning July 11\, 2026\, until the end of 2026. Submissions should be sent to Connor.Humphrey@ky.gov. Submissions will not be accepted after the deadline of June 30th. \nWe look forward to seeing your photos!

DESCRIPTION:First Day Hikes \nThursday\, January 1\, 2026 \nHike #1 at 11 A.M. \nHike #2 at 2:00 P.M. \nJohn James Audubon Museum Front Lawn \nFree \n  \nJoin the nationwide movement to get outdoors on the first day of the year! John James Audubon State Park will host two First Day Hikes on New Year’s Day\, 2026. Hike #1 will begin at 11 A.M. and Hike #2 will start at 2:00 P.M. All participants\, please meet our naturalist on the Audubon Museum front lawn to be counted in this First Day event and help us beat our attendance record!! Hikers will experience the winter woods of the nature preserve during this picturesque 1-mile guided hike over hilly terrain. These will start out as guided hikes but can diverge from there\, if you’d prefer to go your own way. Sturdy shoes\, walking sticks\, and attire suitable for the day’s weather are recommended. No pets\, please. Olson – Audubon Redrawn: New Light on the Artist and the Birds he Painted \nWednesday\, January 14\, 2026 \n6:00 P.M. to 7:30 Central Standard Time \nOnline \nFREE \n  \nThe John James Audubon Museum is excited to host its first online presentation by Dr. Roberta J. M. Olson! Roberta Olson received her Ph.D. in Art History from Princeton University. Curator of Drawings Emerita at The New York Historical and Professor Emerita of Art History at Wheaton College in Massachusetts\, her interdisciplinary research concerns drawings\, Italian Renaissance art\, and representations of birds and astronomical phenomena. Among her most recent books are: Audubon as Artist: A New Look at “The Birds of America” which she will be discussing in this presentation. She is collaborating with the publisher Taschen on a double-elephant-folio-size book of all the Audubon-Havell plates entitled John James Audubon and The Birds of America. This event is free to the public and will be accessible through a link that will be posted to our social media pages. This free naturalist-led hike will explore Audubon Wetlands in winter\, wandering a 1-mile course through field\, shrub wetland/slough\, and bottomland forest. Discover how flora and fauna handle the seasonal changes in this unique habitat. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes.
