This is an uncolored lithograph of a polar bear for John James Audubon and John Woodhouse Audubon’s publication, The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. J. T. Bowen is the lithographer of this print. The lithographer details a polar bear standing at the edge of a cliff and overlooking an ocean bay. In the background is a glacier floating in the water and hanging from the cliff is some moss. Below the image in the center is an inscription that reads: “URSUS MARITIMUS / LINN / POLAR BEAR / MALE”. The bottom-left of the image reads: “Drawn from Nature by J.W. Audubon.” To the bottom-right of the image is an inscription that reads: “Lith.d, Printed & Col.d by J.T. Bowen, Philad.a, 1846.” On the top-right corner is an inscription reading: “PLATE XCL.” The top-left bears an inscription reading: “No. 19”.
